Filming in Vancouver: Hilary Swank, Camilla Mendes, Chesapeake Shores on Vancouver Island

In this week’s roundup of screen productions coming and going from these parts, a horror-thriller feature is calling it a wrap in Vancouver.

Meanwhile over on Vancouver Island, a multi-generational family drama TV series is also finishing up.

However, there’s some exciting news as a two-time Academy Award winner will be coming to town this summer to shoot a new sci-fi series.

So if this interests you, meet us after the jump for what’s happening in Vancouver’s (and B.C.’s) screen scene.

Chesapeake Shores

The Hallmark Channel’s Chesapeake Shores, which began filming on April 1, finishes up shooting six episodes for Season 4 today (May 27) over on Vancouver Island.

Filming has taken place in Parksville, Qualicum Beach, and Nanaimo. And the production has been conscientious about giving back to the communities that hosted them.

According to Parksville Qualicum Beach News, crew members donated five racks of clothing to Parksville’s SOS Thrift Shop, which raises funds for over 30 local programs and services.

Meghan Ory

Based on the novels by author Sherryl Woods, this multigenerational family drama follows career woman Abby O’Brien (Meghan Ory) as she returns to her hometown of Chesapeake Shores in Maryland.

Back home, she reconnects with her high-school sweetheart (Jesse Metcalfe) while becoming involved in the lives of her various family members, including her estranged mother (Barbara Niven).

Jesse Metcalfe

The cast includes Treat Williams, Diane Ladd, Laci J. Mailey, Emilie Ullerup, Brendan Penny, and Andrew Francis.

Season 4 will premiere this summer.

Although this season will be shorter than previous seasons (which have had 10 episodes each), Hallmark announced in February that Ory, Ullerup and Mailey will star in a spin-off movie that will follow the O’Brien sisters to Rome for the wedding of a childhood friend.

Camilla Mendes

After that one finishes up, the feature film Windfall, directed by Michael Scott (Date My Dad), wraps on Tuesday (May 28), having started back on April 30.

In this horror-thriller, a caregiver, played by Riverdale’s Camilla Mendes, discovers that the wealthy elderly man who she takes care of has left his entire estate to her after he dies.

Unfortunately, she soon finds herself at the centre of a criminal investigation as she becomes immersed in a world of deception and murder.

Jamie Chung

The cast also includes Jamie Chung, Sasha Alexander, Cam Gigandet, Elliott Gould, Jessie T. Usher, Trevor Lerner, and Nick Purcha.

Later on this year, a new sci-fi TV series will bring a big box-office name to town.

The Netflix TV series Away will shoot 10 episodes for Season 1 from August 26 to February 5, 2020.

It stars none other than two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank as a U.S. astronaut who leaves her husband and daughter behind on Earth as she leads an international space crew on a dangerous mission to Mars.

The rest of the cast is yet to be revealed and a release date hasn’t been announced yet.

We’ll have to wait to see who else that show might bring.

But in the meantime, we’ll have more to news to share, of course, so until we meet again, happy Vancouver-spotting on a screen near you.
