Vancouverites can join in the fun on Monday, December 21 from the comfort of home with lantern and food video tutorials, and a live stream celebration.

The 2017 Winter Solstice Lantern Festival Lights up the Darkest Day of the Year

If the days are feeling shorter than usual, that’s because we’re slowly inching towards the shortest day of the year – winter solstice. Thursday, December 21 marks the start of the winter – the day with the smallest amount of daylight. Luckily, this just means that we’re getting closer and closer to summer!

To celebrate the winter solstice, Vancouver is hosting the 24th annual Winter Solstice Lantern Festival, a series of community events on Thursday, December 21, 2017, that feature food, music and fire performances at night. The festival helps to make the ‘darkest day of the year’ a bit more bright.

You’re invited to experience Vancouver in a whole new light with the debut of Canada’s largest Chinese Lantern Festival coming to the city this December.

This five week celebration of Chinese culture will feature massive lanterns, unforgettable performances, and incredible food. The outdoor festival is lighting up for the first time on December 15, 2017 and will until January 21, 2018.

The Winter Solstice Lantern Festival Celebrates the Shortest Day of the Year

The winter solstice officially marks the longest night of the year in Canada, and is known as the official start of the winter season. But, since it already seems like we’ve been in the winter season for quite awhile in Vancouver – let’s just say it’s the start of the official countdown back to summer!

This year, winter solstice is being held on Wednesday, December 21 and to mark the longest and darkest night of the year, Vancouver will be hosting a party. You are invited to light up the night on Wednesday with the Winter Solstice Lantern Festival, taking place in three neighbourhoods across the city for the 23rd year.
