Filming in Vancouver: Jim Carrey, James Marsden, iZombie, Wu Assassins, and Salvation

James Marsden

In this week’s roundup of what’s going on in Vancouver’s screen scene, there’s a production about a super speedy hedgehog—and it’s got some big names attached to it.

There are also two TV crime drama series getting underway, including a zomcom-crime drama and a martial arts supernatural crime drama.

Plus a sci-fi thriller is wrapping up on its latest season.

Here’s a look at what’s filming in Vancouver this week.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Gamers, it’s game on.

The live-action/CGI feature film of the Sega video game Sonic the Hedgehog started shooting on July 30 and continues until September 26.

In this big-screen adaptation of the game franchise about a blue hedgehog (which launched back in 1991), Sonic and his friends band together to defeat the evil Dr. “Eggman” Robotnik.

Jim Carrey

The cast includes none other than Jim Carrey (Horton Hears a Who!) in the role of the villainous mad scientist Eggman.

James Marsden (Shock and Awe) will play Sheriff Tom Wachowski, and the cast also includes Natasha Rothwell (Insecure) and Tika Sumpter (The Haves and the Have Nots).

Rose McIver stars in iZombie

It’s also game on for iZombie—which launches into production on its final season.

The zomcom crime procedural starts in on Season 5 today (August 7) and continues until January 21.

Rose McIver stars as Liv Moore, a medical student who became a zombie and helped to solve crimes by eating the brains of the dead and seeing their memories.

In Season 4, Seattle (played by none other than Vancouver) was walled in by the U.S. government to contain the zombie outbreak, becoming the city of New Seattle.

Malcolm Goodwin and David Anders

The cast includes Malcolm Goodwin, Rahul Kohli, Robert Buckley, David Anders, and Aly Michalka.

Departures from the show include Robert Knepper as an anti-human zombie cult leader.

Iko Uwais

A new TV series that’s kicking off—quite literally—will bring chop-socky action to town.

Netflix’s Wu Assassins starts shooting Season 1 on Wednesday (August 8) and continues until November 20.

In this martial arts crime series, Indonesian action star Iko Uwais (Mile 22) portrays aspiring chef Kai Jin, who is recruited as a Wu Assassin to battle supernatural enemies in San Francisco’s Chinatown.

Wu will also serve as the lead martial-arts and fight choreographer and stunt coordinator.

Lewis Tan

The cast includes Katheryn Winnick (Vikings), Lewis Tan (Into the Badlands), Tommy Flanagan (Sons of Anarchy), Tzi Ma (Meditation Park), and Byron Mann (Altered Carbon).

Salvation

Meanwhile, the sci-fi thriller Salvation concluded shooting 13 episodes of Season 2 on August 3. It started on March 7 and the Season 2 premiere aired on June 25.

The show follows MIT grad student Liam Cole (Charlie Rowe) and tech billionaire Darius Tanz (Santiago Cabrera), who join forces to figure out to save the world from a massive asteroid that’s on a collision path with the earth.

The cast includes Jennifer Finnigan, Jacqueline Byers, Rachel Drance, Shazi Raja, Ian Anthony Dale, Ashley Thomas, and Melia Kreiling.

Salvation

And on that note, that’s it for this week but stay tuned for more developments to report on from Vancouver’s ever-changing screen scene.
