Filming in Vancouver: Keri Russell, Elijah Wood, Charmed, The Detour, and more

Keri Russell will come to Vancouver to star in the supernatural horror Antlers.

A spooky theme runs through this week’s roundup of what’s filming in (or coming to) Vancouver.

There’s a new supernatural horror feature film and a much-buzzed TV series reboot about a trio of witches.

There’s also a feature black comedy thriller, and two sci-fi TV series. But in the mix, there’s also a comedy about a family on the run that’s moving to Vancouver.

Here’s the rundown on what’s happening in Vancouver’s screen scene.

First up, there’s a creepy new film coming to town that’s being produced by a major Hollywood director.

The supernatural horror Antlers will shoot from October 1 to November 20.

Directed by Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart), this film is based upon the short story “The Quiet Boy” by Nick Antosca.

Keri Russell

When a teacher takes interest in her withdrawn and troubled student, she learns that his father and younger brother have a mysterious connection to a supernatural secret. As she takes him, she is forced to protect him from horrors that threaten their survival.

Thus far, the only cast member announced is Keri Russell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes).

Among the film’s producing team is none other than Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water).

Elijah Wood

Meanwhile, the black comedy-thriller Come to Daddy started filming on July 16 and wrapped up on August 12.

Details are slim on this one, but this feature directorial debut by Ant Timpson stars Elijah Wood as a 30-something man who travels to a remote cabin to reconnect with his estranged father.

Wood is no stranger to these parts, as he starred as Todd Brotzman in the TV series Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, which was unfortunately cancelled after its second season in 2017.

The original Charmed TV series

Going back to the supernatural, but on the TV side of things, the Charmed reboot starts in Season 1.

It kicks off today (August 13) and continues to December 21.

The original fantasy-drama series ran from 1998 to 2006 and starred Alyssa Milano, Shannen Doherty, Holly Marie Combs, and Rose McGowan, as sisters who used the power of witchcraft to battle evil in San Francisco.

Madeleine Mantock

The new version stars Madeleine Mantock, Melonie Diaz, and Sarah Jeffrey as sisters who discover they are witches who have the Power of Three they can use to protect innocent people and to ward off the demonic forces.

Melonie Diaz

Their powers slightly differ from the original show (they have telekinesis, time freezing, and mind-reading) and the story is set in the fictional college town of Hilltowne.

The cast will also include Rupert Evans, Ser’Darius Blain, and Ellen Tamaki.

Katee Sackhoff

Another TV series starting up today is a new one. Production on 10 episodes for Season 1 of the Netflix web series Another Life will run from August 13 to November 20.

Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica) stars as an astronaut who leads a crew on a mission to examine an alien artifact but encounter unexpected dangers that may make their journey a one-way trip.

The rest of the cast hasn’t been announced yet.

The 100

Continuing on with the sci-fi theme, The 100 launches into production on Season 6 on Wednesday (August 15), and continues until January 31.

Set in the wake of a nuclear apocalypse, the series follows a group of juvenile prisoners are sent to Earth to determine if the planet can be re-inhabited.

Season 5 followed what happened after the world’s nuclear reactors underwent meltdowns due to decades of neglect. As the survivors sought a new place to live, the next season will undoubtedly showcase new terrain—both literally and figuratively—to explore.

Jason Jones

Back on earth but still moving around, the TV comedy series The Detour has filmed in a different location each season and for Season 4, it’ll be transplanting itself in this city from September 4 to October 31.

The series follows a family who (in Season 1, shot in Georgia) left their family home in Syracuse, New York, for a road trip to Florida. It turns out the real motivation for the trip was their father (Jason Jones) was leaving behind professional troubles. After relocating to New York City (Season 2), the mother (Natalie Zea) comes under scrutiny for her relationship with her felon father. In Season 3, the family went on the run to Alaska.

Which place will Vancouver play in Season 4? Washington, Oregon, California? Or will the family move to Canada?

We’ll have to wait and see.

The cast also includes Ashley Gerasimovich, Liam Carroll, and Daniella Pineda.

Natalie Zea

Well, looks like there’s plenty in town to keep the local screen industries hopping. But what else will be coming to Vancouver to add to the fun? Tune in again, true believers, to find out the answer to that and more in the weeks to come.
