Filming in Vancouver: The Lost Boys, The Good Doctor, and The 100

Freddie Highmore stars in the Vancouver-shot medical drama The Good Doctor.

In this week’s roundup of what’s going down in Vancouver’s screen scene, we vamp it up a bit.

To wit, an ‘80s vampire movie is about to get adapted for home-viewing audiences.

Meanwhile, two TV series are calling it a wrap on their latest seasons this week.

One is a medical drama that revolves around a talented surgeon with autism while the other is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi drama.

So with all that said, here’s this week’s look at what’s coming and going from the streets of Hollywood North.

The Lost Boys

Now here’s a show that promises some bite.

A TV pilot for the ‘80s cult-hit movie The Lost Boys will shoot from March 13 to April 2.

This adaptation of the 1987 horror-comedy feature about vampires will be directed by filmmaker Catherine Hardwicke, who is acquainted with the realm of the undead—she directed the 2008 romance-fantasy Twilight (hey, anyone remember that one?) that launched the insanely popular, commercially successful franchise (which had several shooting locations in Vancouver and B.C.).

Catherine Hardwicke

The original film launched the careers of many stars, including Kiefer Sutherland, Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, and Jason Patric.

This home-screen version is set in the Californian beach town of Santa Carla, where two brothers relocate to with their mother after the death of their father.

There, the brothers are drawn into the town’s mysterious underworld of vampires.

The cast hasn’t been announced for this one yet so we’ll have to stay tuned to see who’s coming to town for this project.

The Good Doctor

Moving from a subculture of the undead to the world of improving and saving the living, The Good Doctor will finish up work on its second season on Tuesday (February 12).

The medical drama, which began shooting Season 2 last year on June 27, is a U.S. adaptation of a South Korean TV series of the same name.

The Good Doctor

In the series, Freddie Highmore (who formerly starred on the Vancouver-filmed TV series Bates Motel) stars as an autistic savant surgeon who moves from a small city to San Jose to work at a well-respected hospital.

The cast includes Nicholas Gonzalez, Antonia Thomas, Tamlyn Tomita, Hill Harper, and Richard Schiff.

Although two cast members, Beau Garrett (who also played Phoebe on the Vancouver-shot Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce), and Chuku Modu, departed from the show, several actors were promoted to series regulars: Will Yun Lee, Fiona Gubelmann, Christina Chang, and Paige Spara.

And the good news about the Doctor is that it has been renewed for a third season.

Also finishing up this week is The 100, which completes production on Season 6 on Wednesday (February 13), having started back on August 27.

The 100

This dystopian sci-fi drama series follows a group of human survivors who are sent from a space station back to Earth to re-inhabit the planet decades after a devastating nuclear apocalypse.

The cast includes Eliza Taylor, Bob Morley, Marie Avgeropoulos, Lindsey Morgan, Paige Truco, Adina Porter, Tasya Teles, and Lola Flanery.

Luckily for fans, there’s not much longer of a wait for new episodes of the show as Season 6 is scheduled to premiere on April 30.

While we wait for that one to hit the airwaves, we’ll have plenty of more movie and TV news to share with you in the weeks to come.

Until next time, have fun spotting Vancouver on a screen near you.
