BC’s artisan distillery industry continues to grow and excel, winning medals at national competitions for the quality of their products.

Fans of spirits like vodka, gin, and whisky can rejoice at the return of the sixth annual BC Distilled Festival that features a public tasting as well as other spirit-related events.

Canada’s premier artisan distillery event, BC Distilled (Croatian Cultural Centre, 3520 Commercial Drive), happens April 6, 2019, in two tastings: a trade/VIP one from 2pm to 4:30pm and a public tasting from 6pm to 9pm. Tickets are $79.99 (plus a service fee) for the trade tasting and $69.99 (plus a service fee) for the public tasting.

On April 6, there will be 40 BC distilleries in attendance, 25 of them medal-winners at the Canadian Artisan Spirit Competition. The participants include: After Dark Distillery Ltd., Mad Laboratory Distilling, Pemberton Distillery Inc., The Dubh Glas Distillery, Tofino Distillery, and Wayward Distillation House.

You’re welcome to sample from the various attendees to your heart’s content (samples are not ticketed) in a relaxed and uncrowded atmosphere. You can take your time tasting their premium products, chatting with staff and distillers to find out more about their processes and the distinct flavour profiles of their offerings.

As a bonus, if you love cute dogs, BC Distilled has invited volunteers with Pacific Assistance Dogs Society (PADS) to roam the event with their dogs, selling tickets for a fundraising 50/50 draw ($5000 raised last year).

Whisky fans or aspiring fans will enjoy the BC Whisky Master Classes, held March 31, 2019, from 2pm to 4pm and April 1, 2019, from 7pm to 9pm at Legacy Liquor Store (1633 Manitoba Street). Tickets are $35 (plus a service fee). The class will be taught by Charlene Rooke, a Certified Specialist of Spirits, editor/journalist, and lead judge for the Canadian Artisan Spirit competition. The distilleries participating will include: de Vine Spirits, Monashee Spirits Craft Distillery, and Shelter Point Distillery. It will be the largest selection of BC whiskies available at a single event. Expect a fun and educational couple of hours in which Rooke walks you through tips for whisky tasting, the vocabulary of tasting, the flavour wheel, as well as the various styles and types of whisk(e)y. Rooke will work to make the session engaging, accessible, and highly informative, including many anecdotes as well as little known facts in whisky lore.

During the roughly two hour session, she will allow plenty of time for contemplative solo tasting, as well as discussion with those around you about what you are tasting in the glasses in front of you. As well, the producers of the various whiskies will also be in attendance to introduce their products, as well as answer any questions that you may have.

And on April 5, 2019, Forage (1300 Robson Street)) will be hosting a Distillers Dinner, which will see Chef Welbert Choi crafting six farm-to-table courses paired with six cocktails and spirits from BC distilleries. These include Lady of the Cask from Maple Leaf Spirits, Ethos Gin from Monashee Spirits Craft Distillery, and Drunken Hive Rum from Wayward Distillation House. The dinner, which has a vegetarian option, is $119 (plus a service fee). There’s also the option of adding a cocktail reception at next door Timber Gastropub (1300 Robson Street) with The Woods Spirit Co. ($149 plus a service fee for the cocktail reception and dinner).
