Filming in Vancouver: Jason Momoa, John Cena, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, and more

Jason Momoa

This week’s roundup of what’s happening in Vancouver’s screen scene is full of comings and goings.

A WWE star and a Hawaiian star who made a major splash this past year (see above) will be calling it a wrap while a hit teen romance starts filming its sequel.

There’s a whole slew of TV series and TV pilots to tell you about so instead of summarizing it all, let’s just get to it, shall we?

Feature films

Sadly, it looks like John Cena’s time in Vancouver has been all played out.

The family comedy feature Playing With Fire, which started production on February 4 (with production based in Burnaby), will call it wrap on Friday (March 29).

Directed by Andy Fickman (She’s the Man), the movie explores what happens when a bunch of wildfire fighters in the Eastern Sierras rescue a trio of rambunctious children, the three orphans become determined to remain together after they find out that they’ll be sent to separate foster homes.

In addition to the affable WWE star, the cast includes Judy Greer, Keegan-Michael Key, John Leguizamo, and Brianna Hildebrand.

Fans will have to wait exactly one year to see the movie as the release date is scheduled for March 20, 2020.

But while that project may be ending, another one is just getting going.

Lana Condor

The Netflix sequel To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before 2, based on Jenny Han’s book series, starts filming on Wednesday (March 27) and will continue until May 8.

Lana Condor reprises her lead role in the teen romance, in which a high-school student’s secret love letters get sent—without her knowledge—to their recipients.

The cast will also see the return of Noah Centineo, Anna Cathcart, Janel Parrish, and John Corbett, and will be joined by Fahad Alhaj.

TV series

A rarity in show biz, one of the longest-running TV series currently shooting in Vancouver will finish up work on its latest season this week.

Supernatural began production back on July 10, 2018 and will wind up work on its latest season on Tuesday (March 26).

Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki

Believe it or not but the dynamic duo of Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles have now played brothers Sam and Dean Winchester for a whopping 14 seasons—yes, fourteen—as they’ve hunted down and done battle with all manner of supernatural creatures.

Alexandra Breckenridge

The Netflix romance drama series Virgin River will complete production on Season 1 on Tuesday (March 26), having started on December 3.

The show, based on the novels by Robyn Carr, follows the recently divorced Melinda Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge), who moves from a big city to the remote California town of Virgin River to work as a nurse practitioner but discovers that adjusting to smalltown life isn’t as simple as she thought it would be.

The cast also include Martin Henderson, Tim Matherson, and Annette O’Toole.

Another TV series finishing up work on its first season is See, which filmed from September 26 to March 29.

Described as a “world-building epic”, this sci-fi drama is set in a future in which all of humanity has lost the ability of vision. Although society learns to adapt to this development, all of that becomes challenged when twins are born with the ability to see.

Jason Momoa (Aquaman) plays leader and warrior Baba Voss while the cast also includes Alfre Woodward, Yadira Guevara-Prip, Nesta Cooper, Syliva Hoeks, Christian Camargo, Hera Hilmar, and Archie Madekwe.

TV pilots

We’ve been in the midst of TV pilot season and while a few have already wrapped, some are just starting up.

Ruby Rose

Two that are wrapping this week include Batwoman (filmed from March 4 to 25), which stars Ruby Rose and will add a new series to the Arrowverse if approved, and The Hypnotist’s Love Story (filming from March 10 to 27), based on the bestselling book by Liane Moriarty.

Nasim Pedrad

Two that are starting up today (March 25) include Chad (shooting until April 1), starring Nasim Pedrad (Saturday Night Live), and The Haunting of Nancy Drew (which goes until April 9), the latest adaptation of the classic American teen detective series.

John Slattery

The high-tech thriller Next will shoot from Tuesday (March 26) to April 11.

In this potential new sci-fi series based on the latest artificial intelligence research, a former tech CEO, played by John Slattery (Mad Men), joins forces with a cybersecurity agent to stop a rogue AI that has the ability to continuously improve itself.

The cast includes Fernanda Andrade, Aaron Moten, Eve Harlow, John Billingsley, Michael Mosley, and Evan Whitten.

While we wait on word on whether those pilot projects get greenlit to become full-fledged series, we’ve got plenty of other news to tell you about in the meantime so check back in with us again.

In the meantime, good luck Vancouver-spotting on screens near you!
