Guest Member Interview: The Vancouver Art Gallery

The Vancouver Art Gallery shares a glimpse into new exhibitions and safety protocols to help you enjoy the Gallery! It’s the perfect time to visit the Gallery as the weather changes this fall and winter. It’s a safe and secure space to enjoy art by yourself or with your bubble.
What sets you apart from other Vancouver attractions?
Founded in 1931, the Vancouver Art Gallery is recognized as one of North America’s most respected and innovative visual arts institutions. The Gallery’s ground-breaking exhibitions, extensive public programs and emphasis on advancing scholarship all focus on historical and contemporary art from British Columbia and around the world. Special attention is given to the accomplishments of Indigenous artists, as well as to those of the Asia Pacific region. The Gallery’s exhibitions also explore the impact of images in the larger sphere of visual culture, design and architecture.

What’s new at the Vancouver Art Gallery?
Since re-opening this past summer, we have launched Modern in the Making: Post-War Craft and Design in British Columbia which features over 300 works, covering furniture, ceramics, textiles, fashion and jewellery that defined West Coast modern living in the mid-twentieth century. We also invite everyone to experience the world of Op Art with our Fall exhibitions opening on October 17: Victor Vasarely, Op Art in Vancouver and Uncommon Language.

What do you want locals to know about your business?
The Gallery has recently turned 89 years old! We are looking forward to celebrating our 90th anniversary in 2021. The Vancouver Art Gallery is a not-for-profit organization supported by its members, individual donors, corporate funders, foundations, the City of Vancouver, the Province of British Columbia through the BC Arts Council, and the Canada Council for the Arts.
We also rely on the revenue earned from single ticket admissions and we hope that Vancouver and BC residents are able to visit and support us during the pandemic. We also offer admission access programs every Tuesdays from 5pm to 8pm – where everyone can pay what then can to enter the Gallery.

Are there any new access policies that you have put into place that guests should be aware of before visiting you?
We care about you and your safety! Since re-opening, procedures have been put in place to ensure that the Vancouver Art Gallery is safe, sanitized and ready to welcome all visitors, volunteers and staff. The Gallery’s health and safety protocols follow the latest health, safety and cleaning measures as outlined by government agencies and health industry experts. We have also increased these standards by requiring masks. Our protocols are designed to help everyone feel and stay safe and visit us with confidence. By following the Gallery’s health and safety protocols, you are safeguarding your health and the well-being of others, ensuring that you can have a great art experience.
