Arty Guava – Three Figures

Margaret Atwood. Margaret Laurence. Robertson Davies. Timothy Findley. These were the big names in Canadian Literature (CanLit) who emerged in the 1960s and 1970s and formed an initial literary canon.

Now in 2021, while these names continue to be highly recognized, new and diverse writers increasingly make up the national literary scene.

“They were the canon of CanLit. Clearly, that’s just not a good representation of who we are here in Canada, and I think finally, we’re catching up to that. The result is we get to add many, many different voices to that list of CanLit superstars,” says Leslie Hurtig, Artistic Director of the Vancouver Writers Fest.

Vancouver Biennale: Sparking Conversation with Public Art

Buffy Sainte-Marie among the performers at this year’s Verses Festival of Words

Canadian music icon Buffy Sainte-Marie headlines this year’s Verses Festival of Words.

The singer/songwriter/activist is the most prominent figure at the spoken-word festival, which takes place April 19-29, with 30+ events across East Vancouver.

Along with Sainte-Marie, guests include radio host Janet Rogers, burlesque dancer Sparkle Plenty and cyber-punk poet Joshua Whitehead, amongst many others. In addition, a poetry competition will bring students from across B.C. to perform original works.

Historic Orpheum Celebrates 90 Years With Themed Celebration

This November, Vancouver’s iconic Orpheum celebrates 90 years of entertainment. To honour the anniversary, citizens are invited to attend a 1920s themed, Orpheum 90, party presented by Vancouver Civic Theatres (VCT) in partnership with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO).

Vancouver Art Gallery North Plaza Reopens

After closing for renovations mid-2016, the new Vancouver Art Gallery (750 Hornby St.) north plaza has reopened after a $9 million dollar renovation. The previous design of wood mulch and center fountain are now gone, giving way to a new paved plaza with potted plants, casual seating, and a pavilion on the Howe Street side, offering refuge for commuters in the rainy months and as a potential tourism information centre in the summer.

It’s a beautiful and inspiring moment when members of a community can come together with the unified purpose to lift each other up, to share a platform to raise each other’s voices, and to help each other shine. The team behind the Vancouver Queer Film Festival have been doing that for 28 years, and this year the spotlight is as bright and wide as it’s ever been.
