I hear it’s going to be a rainy weekend, so make sure to waterproof your boots in preparation for taking in all the art at the the East Side Culture Crawl, for finding your way to the Turkish film festival, for stomping along to the bellows of the Accordion Noir Festival, and for exploring all the acts at the Chutzpah! festival.
It’s Sea Otter Awareness Week, and we can’t think of anything more adorable to participate in this weekend. Less cute but just as fun, there’s also a group night run, a Brazilian dance party cruise, the last performances of Bard on the Beach for the year, and the first of this year’s haunted tours.
Cyclists, this is your weekend. The Gran Fondo is on, allowing an uninterrupted ride up the Sea to Sky Highway to Whistler. Or, if you prefer neon garb and blinky lights to padded shorts and clip-in shoes, Bike the Night is the place to be in Vancouver. There’s also many events to cycle to; the Fringe Festival, a ballet about social media dating, Marc Maron, Bon Iver, rugby, supercars, and the Facade Festival.
It’s one of those calm late summer weekends when all you need is a scenic spot of shade to sit and a cool beverage to make a great weekend. But if that’s not enough for you, there’s an art festival, a drag workshop, baseball, concerts, theatre and a convention dedicated to our animal friends.
This weekend is your chance to get a new perspective and hear a voice you may not otherwise with one of the many films at the Vancouver Queer Film Festival. The PNE is also now officially open with rides, weird foods and more; SeaWheeze is on with yoga, a run and an outdoor music festival; and Ambleside Park has the Blue Oyster Cult and Tom Cochrane.
This weekend is a good weekend to be an animal lover. You can toast to aquatic life at the aquarium, watch dogs with tiny little legs run a race at Hastings Racecourse, and giggle the night away at Yuk Yuks while helping the BCPSCA. Plus there’s plenty of music, dance, and theatre across the city in between all that cuteness.
